Against the Grain
This painted skateboard was inspired by the many afternoons and late nights I’ve spent at skateparks, watching my husband skate and feeling warmly welcomed by the skateboarding community. The piece reflects the vibrant, dynamic energy of these spaces, featuring typical scenes found at skateparks—from a woman collecting cans to scooter kids causing chaos. I used the natural grains of the skateboard wood to guide the shapes of ramps, stairs, and roads, blending the organic texture of the wood with the vibrant energy of the park. This piece captures both the spirit of skateboarding and my connection to the culture that’s been a part of my life for so long.
